Week Ahead - Nov 2nd

Next week, investors will closely monitor the US midterm elections, with polls suggesting Republicans could lose their majority in the House and potentially control of the Senate, complicating President Trump’s efforts to advance his agenda. Geopolitical developments in the Middle East and Ukraine will also remain in focus. On the corporate front, earnings season continues, with Apple, Palantir, AMD, McDonald’s, Qualcomm and Uber among the major companies scheduled to report. The OPEC meeting will also be closely watched for signals on oil production and supply. On the economic data front, the US monthly jobs report will take center stage, alongside ISM PMIs, JOLTS job openings, factory orders, trade data and the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey. Elsewhere, investors will assess PMI releases from China, Eurozone inflation data, and monetary policy decisions from the BoE, the RBA, and the central banks of Sweden, Norway, Brazil and Mexico.

In the US, voters will head to the polls on November 3 for the midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress and shape President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his policy agenda. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats will be contested.  Democrats are widely predicted to win the ?House of Representatives, but the Senate is more in doubt. Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress during the first two years of the Trump administration. Meanwhile, several Federal Reserve policymakers are scheduled to speak, with investors looking for clues on the outlook for interest rates. The third-quarter earnings season will gather momentum, with results due from major companies including Apple, Palantir, Realty Income, AMD, Amgen, Pfizer, McDonald's, Qualcomm, Uber, ConocoPhillips and Berkshire Hathaway. On the economic front, the closely watched US jobs report will offer fresh insight into labor market conditions, while October’s ISM manufacturing and services surveys will provide an early gauge of business activity. Nonfarm payrolls are expected to have increased by 56,000, up from 29,000 in September, while the unemployment rate is forecast to hold steady at 4.2% and monthly wage growth to accelerate to 0.3% from 0.1%. Both ISM surveys are expected to signal continued economic momentum, despite persistent cost pressures. The preliminary November reading of the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index is expected to point to a further deterioration in household confidence, while JOLTS job openings are forecast to edge up to 7.10 million in September from 7.08 million in August. Other releases to watch include factory orders, the ADP employment report, Challenger job cuts, international trade data, third-quarter labor productivity and costs and consumer credit. Finally, investors will also be closely watching the Treasury’s upcoming quarterly refunding announcement for further details on the government’s borrowing plans. Elsewhere in America, Canada’s employment and trade figures will be in focus, alongside the 2026 budget announcement. Other releases include business and consumer confidence in Mexico, industrial production and trade data in Brazil, regional PMI surveys and central banks monetary policy decisions in Brazil and Mexico.

Europe
In the United Kingdom, the Bank of England will announce its latest interest rate decision on Thursday. Markets expect the central bank to raise rates for the first time in more than three years, potentially beginning a series of hikes to contain inflationary pressures from the energy shock. The BoE will also publish updated inflation forecasts, having previously warned that price growth could exceed 4% early next year. Rate decisions are also scheduled in Sweden, Norway and Poland. On the data front, preliminary Eurozone inflation is expected to accelerate to 3.9% in October, its highest level since September 2023. This follows last week's figures showing annual harmonised inflation at 5.6% in Italy, 4.9% in Spain, 3.8% in France and 2.8% in Germany. Inflation figures from Switzerland and Turkey will also be closely watched. In Germany, factory orders are expected to rebound following August's sharp decline, while industrial production is forecast to increase for a second consecutive month. Manufacturing PMI readings are expected to show slower expansion in Spain, while Italy's manufacturing sector is likely to contract. Switzerland, by contrast, is expected to report stronger manufacturing activity. In the services sector, both Italy and Spain are forecast to record slower growth. Other key data releases include retail sales for the Euro Area, Germany and Italy; the UK's Lloyds House Price Index; industrial production in France; unemployment figures in Spain; Switzerland's jobless rate, retail sales and consumer confidence; and Turkey's trade balance. On the earnings front, Ryanair, Ferrari, Bayer, Philips, BMW, Leonardo, Deutsche Telekom, Rheinmetall, Engie, Commerzbank, Daimler Truck are among companies scheduled to report.

Asia-Pacific
In China, investors will focus on the October RatingDog Manufacturing and Services PMI reports, with factory growth seen slowing slightly. In Japan, attention will turn to September wage data and markets will also examine minutes from the BOJ’s September meeting, when policymakers raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.25%, before keeping them unchanged in October. Final S&P Global PMIs are also due. In Australia, the Reserve Bank of Australia is widely expected to increase its cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.85% amid mounting inflationary pressures, largely driven by higher fuel costs. Other important releases include building permits which are expected to rebound 2.1%, household spending, seen edging up 0.2% and international trade data. Elsewhere in the region, South Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam will publish trade figures, while inflation reports are due from Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan. GDP data will also be released for Hong Kong and Indonesia, alongside labor market figures from New Zealand and the Philippines. Additionally, manufacturing PMI reports are scheduled across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Singapore. Finally, Bank Negara Malaysia is also set to announce its monetary policy decision. On the earnings front, Nintendo, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo and State Bank of India are among companies set announce results next week.
