Week Ahead - Oct 26th

Next week, investors will closely monitor developments in the Middle East for any further disruptions to oil supplies. The earnings calendar will also be busy, with major technology companies, including hyperscalers Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon, set to report results. Monetary policy will be another key focus, with interest rate decisions due from the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, the Bank of Canada, the Bank of Thailand and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. On the economic front, preliminary GDP figures for the US and the Eurozone will be released, alongside US PCE inflation data and preliminary inflation figures for major European economies, including Germany. Investors will also assess Tokyo inflation and Australia's CPI data. Political developments will remain in the spotlight, including the UK's Autumn Budget, China's Communist Party's fifth plenum, and elections in Brazil and Israel.

Americas
Markets are heading into one of the busiest weeks of the earnings season, with results due from major technology companies Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon, alongside Eli Lilly, Visa, ExxonMobil, Intel, Mastercard, AbbVie, Chevron, Coca-Cola, Caterpillar, Merck, GE Vernova, SanDisk, Verizon, Gilead Sciences, Boeing, T-Mobileamong others. On the monetary policy front, the US Federal Reserve will announce its decision on October 28, with markets broadly expecting interest rates to remain unchanged as policymakers adopt a wait-and-see approach after September’s rate decision. Current pricing suggests just a 9% probability of a rate hike at this meeting, rising to more than 80% for December, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. Attention will also turn to US PCE inflation data and the advance estimate of third-quarter GDP. Headline PCE inflation is expected to rise 0.5% month-on-month in September, the largest increase since March, while core PCE inflation is forecast to accelerate to 0.3%. Meanwhile, US economic growth is projected to accelerate to an annualized 3.0%, from 2.2% in the previous quarter, supported by AI-related investment and resilient consumer spending. Other key US releases include durable goods orders, which are expected to rebound by 0.6%, and employment costs, forecast to ease slightly. Investors will also monitor housing price indexes from the FHFA and S&P/Case-Shiller, new home sales, expected to decline to 660,000, the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index, the goods trade balance, and regional manufacturing surveys. Elsewhere in America, Brazil holds its presidential runoff election, with polls pointing to a narrowing lead for Flávio Bolsonaro over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Bank of Canada’s policy decision will also be in focus amid inflation concerns, alongside Canadian monthly GDP, Mexico’s third-quarter GDP and trade balance, and Brazil’s unemployment rate. In Chile, the central bank will also decide on monetary policy.

Europe
Europe faces a busy week, with the European Central Bank’s interest-rate decision on Thursday and the UK’s Autumn Budget on Wednesday, alongside key GDP, inflation, unemployment and business sentiment data. Economists expect the ECB to keep rates unchanged next week before delivering another hike in December. The bank raised borrowing costs twice since the Iran war began, in June and September, as inflation accelerated to 3.8% last month, while economic output proved more resilient than anticipated. In the UK, Chancellor Healey is expected to balance support for households and businesses facing higher energy costs with a commitment to fiscal discipline. The budget is likely to include a short-term support package funded partly by higher taxes on banks, alongside measures to reduce regulatory burdens and extend import tariff suspensions. Meanwhile, Euro Area GDP is forecast to grow 1.1% year-on-year, slightly below the 1.2% recorded in Q2, while quarterly growth is forecast to slow to 0.2% from 0.6%. Spain is expected to lead the major economies, expanding 0.6% quarter-on-quarter, while Germany and Italy are both forecast to grow by 0.1%. Preliminary GDP figures from France, the Netherlands and other European economies will offer further insight into regional performance. On inflation, Germany’s consumer prices are expected to increase 0.1% month-on-month, while France’s are projected to rise 0.2%, potentially pushing its annual inflation rate higher. Preliminary figures are also due for Spain and Italy. Germany’s Ifo Business Climate Index is expected to ease slightly from its highest level in more than three years, while the GfK consumer confidence indicator is likely to remain weak. Labour market data from the Euro Area, Germany, France, Italy and Spain will also be monitored. Elsewhere, UK mortgage lending, Nationwide house prices and CBI distributive trades data will provide insight into housing and retail activity, while Switzerland’s KOF leading indicators and retail sales, alongside Turkey’s unemployment figures, round out the week’s releases. On the corporate front, HSBC Holdings, Novartis, Banco Santander, Linde and TotalEnergies SE are among the companies scheduled to report quarterly results next week. Sunday's parliamentary election in Serbia will also be on investors' radar.

In China, markets will focus on the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, scheduled for October 26–29, for fresh policy signals on the country’s political and economic direction. Investors will also assess September industrial profits data and the latest manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs from the National Bureau of Statistics. In Japan, the Bank of Japan is widely expected to keep its policy rate unchanged at 1.25% at its October meeting, although a potential rate hike in December remains in focus following an acceleration in inflation above the central bank’s 2% target last month. Key economic releases include consumer confidence, which is expected to edge lower; the unemployment rate, forecast to remain steady at 2.5%; and industrial production, expected to rebound by 1.3%. Retail sales growth is likely to accelerate, while Tokyo core inflation is projected to ease slightly to 2.6% in October. In Australia, investors will assess monthly and quarterly inflation data for further clues on the domestic monetary policy outlook. Annual inflation is expected to accelerate to 4.2% in September, while private-sector credit growth is forecast to slow to 0.5%. Producer price data are also due. India will release industrial production figures, while South Korea and Taiwan will publish third-quarter GDP data, with both economies continuing to benefit from strong semiconductor demand. South Korea will also report industrial production and retail sales, while trade figures are due from Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines. On the monetary policy front, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3% amid mounting inflation risks. Thailand and Pakistan are also scheduled to announce monetary policy decisions. On the corporate front, Samsung Electronics is due to report earnings. Politically, investors will closely monitor Israel’s legislative elections, scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, as polls point to a closely contested race between blocs supporting and opposing Prime Minister Netanyahu.
