Week Ahead - March 25th

This week, the focal point in the United States will revolve around the PCE Prices, alongside reports on personal income and spending and speeches by several Fed officials including Chair Powell drawing significant investor attention. Other key data points include durable goods orders, the final Q4 GDP growth reading, CB consumer confidence, corporate profits, and housing market indicators such as new and pending home sales. Internationally, the spotlight will shine on preliminary March inflation readings from Spain, France, Italy, and Poland, as well as interest rate decisions from Sweden and South Africa. In Germany, market watchers will be keen on updates regarding GFK consumer confidence, retail sales, and the unemployment rate. It will be a busy week in Japan with BoJ Summary of Opinions, unemployment rate, industrial production, retail sales, and housing starts. Finally, Canada will release its February GDP growth estimates.

Americas
In the United States, all eyes are set to focus on the insights shared by Federal Reserve policymakers for further clarity on the central bank's future policy moves, with particular anticipation surrounding remarks from Chief Jerome Powell scheduled for Friday. In addition, key data to follow include PCE price indexes, personal income and outlays, and durable goods orders. Economists see a 0.4% uptick in PCE prices for February, a slight increase from the 0.3% recorded in January, with core prices expected to rise at a more moderate pace of 0.3%. Also, a 0.4% rise in consumer spending and a similar advance in income in expected. Additionally, durable goods orders are set to rebound by 1.3% in February, following the largest decline since April 2020. Investors will also closely monitor the final estimate of Q4 GDP, corporate profits, and Michigan consumer sentiment index. Also, in the focus will be key regional economic indicators (the Chicago PMI, Chicago Fed National Activity Index, and Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index) and housing data (new and pending home sales, Case-Shiller home prices). Elsewhere in America, Canada is slated to release its monthly GDP figures, while both Mexico and Brazil will be publishing unemployment data. The US stock market will be closed on Friday in observance of the Good Friday holiday.

Europe
It will be a light week in terms of economic data in Europe due to the Easter break, with all major bourses closed for Good Friday and Easter Monday. Still, investors will be following preliminary March inflation figures for Spain, France, and Italy. Headline inflation is seen accelerating in Italy and Spain but it is expected to slow in France. Other data releases to follow include: economic business sentiment and final consumer confidence for the Euro Area; the GfK Consumer Confidence, retail sales, and unemployment rate for Germany; final GDP growth estimates for Spain; consumer confidence for France; business and consumer confidence for Italy; and monetary policy decisions from Hungary and Sweden. The National Bank of Hungary is expected to cut borrowing costs further by 75 basis points while the Riksbank will probably make no changes at this meeting. In the UK, final GDP growth figures for Q4, business investment, and the current account will take center stage.

Asia and Australia
A quieter week for Chinese economic releases will include this year’s industrial profits, but markets will pay close attention to potential stimulus announcements and how authorities will steer the yuan’s price after an unexpectedly weak fixing rocked the Asian foreign exchange market. In Japan, all eyes will be on minutes from the BoJ’s last meeting and the Summary of Opinions for insights on how the central bank may follow up on its historic interest rate hike. Other key Japanese releases include the unemployment rate, industrial production, and retail sales for February. Elsewhere, India will release its current account, South Korea will update confidence indicators, and Malaysia will divulge its CPI. In Australia, February’s inflation rate is expected to rise, while markets also await Westpac consumer confidence gauges.
