Japan's Unemployment Rate at 2 Year Low in February


Japan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.6% in February from 4.9 percent in January.

The number of unemployed persons in February 2011 was 3.00 million, a decrease of 240 thousand or 7.4% from the previous year.

The number of employed persons in February 2011 was 62.23 million, an increase of 380 thousand or 0.6% from the previous year.

Jobs in the services sector, including wholesalers and retailers, increased, while the number of workers dismissed by companies declined, the internal affairs ministry said in a preliminary report.

In February, the number of people dismissed from their jobs dropped 280,000 from the same month a year before to 820,000. Meanwhile, the number of workers voluntarily quitting jobs remained unchanged at 1.01 million.

Wholesalers and retailers boosted their payrolls by 210,000 to 10.69 million and the transport and mailing industries increased 130,000 to 3.68 million.
