China's Inflation Fell 1.7% in June

China's consumer price index fell 1.7 percent in June compared with the same month a year earlier, the government said Thursday, the fifth consecutive monthly decline.

For the first half of 2009, the consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, was down 1.1 percent from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said.

The consumer price index fell 1.4 percent in May, according to previous government data.

The consumer price index grew 5.9 percent in 2008 but weakened significantly as the global crisis slowed China's economy.
