Central bank reserves in the United States are cash holdings kept physically in a bank's vaults or as digital deposits held in an account at one of the 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks by depository institutions. They ensure banks can meet customer cash withdrawals and short-term liquidity obligations. Since 2020, the Federal Reserve reduced its minimum reserve requirement ratio to 0%, making all reserves eligible to receive interest on reserve balances (IORB).
