The Chicago Fed Layoffs and Other Separations Rate estimates the share of previously employed workers who became non-employed during the BLS reference week due to layoffs, quits, or discharges. Because separations are the most common path into unemployment, a higher rate typically exerts upward pressure on the unemployment rate.
