According to provisional results of employment accounts, the number of persons in employment rose by 118,000 or 0.3% in October 2012 on September 2012. In each of the past five years, the number of persons in employment had risen by an average 175,000 from September to October. After seasonal adjustment, there was a slight decrease of 9,000 people in October 2012 compared with September 2012.
According to results of the labour force survey, the number of unemployed was up by 1.8% in October 2012 on October 2011. It rose by 36,000 to 2.24 million people. Compared with September 2012, the increase in the number of unemployed amounted to 37,000 persons or 1.8%. When adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed declined by 19,200 to 2.27 million (–0.9%) on September 2012. The adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4% in October 2012.
