New Zealand Unemployment Rate Falls to 6.4%

New Zealand's unemployment rate fell half a percentage point to 6.4 percent in the September quarter, official data showed Thursday.

The seasonally-adjusted figure for the three months to September reflected 23,000 new jobs in the economy, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) said.

The country slumped into recession at the start of 2008, emerging only in the second quarter of last year.

Since then, growth has been patchy, with the economy expanding just 0.2 percent in the three months to June compared to the previous quarter.

SNZ noted there was a sharp difference in the jobless rate between men and women, with female unemployment up 0.4 points to 7.2 percent in the September quarter as male unemployment fell from 6.9 to 5.7 percent in the same period.
