German Unemployment Rate Unchanged at 5.2%


In August, Germany's adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent, its lowest level in more than two decades. A total of 2.17 million people were unemployed, a decrease of 108,000 or 4.8 percent on a year earlier.

Compared with July 2013, the number of unemployed dropped by 77,000 people or 3.6 percent. When adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed amounted to 2.21 million. A total of 41.8 million persons resident in Germany were in employment. Compared with August 2012, this was an increase of 220,000 persons in employment or, as in July 2013, a rise of 0.5 percent.

The number of persons in employment in August 2013 rose by 45,000 people on July 2013, which was slightly below average. The average increase over the last five years was 67,000. After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of the usual seasonal fluctuations, the number of persons in employment rose slightly by 8,000 in August 2013 compared with the previous month.
