German Unemployment Rate Remains at 34-Year Low


German seasonally adjusted harmonised jobless rate remained steady at 4.7 percent for the fifth straight month in June, the lowest since 1981. Unemployment fell slightly while employment showed no growth.

Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed persons edged down 0.5 percent to 1.97 million in June of 2015 from 1.98 million in May. Meanwhile, employment was flat at 39.87 million people.

Compared with June of 2014, unemployment fell 6.2 percent while employment edged up 0.2 percent. 

Youth unemployment rate remained steady at 7.1 percent compared with May but fell 9 percent over a year earlier.

Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of unemployed persons rose by 9000 to 2.799 million in July. The unemployment rate remained steady at a record low 6.4 percent.
