German Jobless Rate Steady at 4.2%

German seasonally adjusted harmonised jobless rate came in at 4.2 percent in June 2016, unchanged from the May rate and down from 4.7 percent a year earlier. It remained at its lowest level since June 1981, as the number of unemployed declined by 0.6 percent from the previous month while the employment level was virtually unchanged.

Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 0.6 percent to 1.80 million from 1.81 million in May, while employment was virtually unchanged at 40.87 million people from 40.86 million.

Compared with June of 2015, unemployment dropped 7.7 percent from 1.95 million people while employment rose 2.3 percent from 39.94 million people. 

Youth unemployment rate was recorded at 7.2 percent, unchanged from the previous month and up from 7.1 percent a year earlier.

Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of unemployed persons fell by 7 thousand in July of 2016. The unemployment rate was steady 6.1 percent.
