Compared with the previous month, the number of unemployed persons fell by 1.2 percent to 1.66 million in January, while employment rose by 0.2 percent to 41.86 million people.
Compared with January 2016, unemployment dropped 11.2 percent from 1.87 million people while employment rose 3.1 percent from 40.61 million people.
Youth unemployment rate declined to 6.5 percent, its lowest level since June 1992, from 6.6 percent in December and 7.2 percent a year earlier.
Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of unemployed persons fell by 14 thousand in February 2017. The unemployment rate was steady at 5.9 percent.
