German Jobless Rate Falls to Fresh 35-Year Low


German seasonally adjusted harmonised jobless rate edged down to 4.3 percent in January 2016, compared to a downwardly revised 4.4 percent in the previous month and hitting a fresh 35-year low. The number of unemployed declined slightly while persons in employment rose. A year ago the unemployment rate was recorded at 4.8 percent.

Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 1.1 percent to 1.83 million from 1.85 million in December, while employment went up by 0.2 percent to 40.39 million people from 40.31 million in the previous month.

Compared with January 2015, unemployment dropped 9.4 percent from 2.02 million people while employment rose 1.1 percent from 39.94 million people. 

Youth unemployment rate was recorded at 7.1 percent, the same as in the previous month and down from 7.2 percent a year earlier.

Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of unemployed persons fell by 10,000 to 2.723 million in February of 2016. The unemployment rate remained unchange at record low of 6.2 percent.
