Germany Unemployment Rate Up to 5.9 Percent in January


In of January 2013, a total of 41.4 million persons resident in Germany were in employment according to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office. Compared with January of 2012, this was an increase of 243,000 persons in employment or 0.6 percent.

The year-on-year difference in employment has thus decreased further in January of 2013. The number of unemployed amounted to around 2.5 million in January of 2013, which was a decrease of about 165,000 on a year earlier. 

The number of persons in employment fell by 391,000 in January of 2013 on December of 2012 (-0.9 percent). This decrease is in line with the average of the last five years. After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of the usual seasonal fluctuations, the relevant number increased by 27,000 in January of 2013 (+0.1 percent) compared with the previous month.
 
According to results of the labour force survey, the number of unemployed was down by 165,000 to 2.50 million in January 2013 compared with January of 2012. That is a decrease by 6.0 percent. Compared with December of 2012, the number of unemployed rose by 247,000 or 11.1 percent.
 
When adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed declined by 11,000 to 2.27 million (-0.4 percent) on December of 2012. The adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.3% in January of 2013.
