Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed fell by 1.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted 1.98 million persons and employment edged up 0.1 percent to 40.18 million. The employment rate increased to 65.5 percent (65.3 percent in December).
Compared with the same month last year, employment grew 1.5 percent while unemployment dropped 7 percent in January of 2015.
Youth unemployment rate decreased to 7.1 percent from 7.2 percent in the previous month.
Separate data from the Labour Office showed the number of people out of work decreased by 20000 on a seasonally-adjusted basis to 2.812 million, the lowest since December 1991.
