Germany Unemployment Rate Up to 7.4 Percent in January of 2013


According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office, the unemployment rate as percentage of total civilian labour force was 7.4 percent in January of 2013. In December of 2012, a total of 41.8 million persons resident in Germany were in employment. Compared with December 2011, this was an increase of 291,000 persons in employment or 0.7 percent.

According to provisional results of employment accounts, the number of persons in employment fell by 189,000 in December 2012 on November 2012 (–0.5 percent). After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of the usual seasonal fluctuations, the relevant number increased by 22,000 in December 2012 (+0.1 percent) compared with the previous month. 

According to results of the labour force survey, the number of unemployed was down by 77,000 to 2.25 million persons in December 2012 compared with December 2011 (–3.4 percent). Compared with November 2012, the number of unemployed increased by 20,000 or 0.9 percent. When adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed declined by 22,000 to 2.24 million (–0.9 percent) on November 2012. The adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.3 percent in December 2012.
