US Productivity Growth Unrevised in Q2

US nonfarm business-sector labor productivity rose 1.4% in the second quarter of 2026, unchanged from the preliminary estimate, following a 0.8% increase in the first quarter.

Output iincreased 1.7% and hours worked increased 0.3%, both in line with the initial estimates..Manufacturing productivity, however, was revised up to 2.4% from a preliminary 1.9%, marking its strongest reading since Q2 2021.

Output growth was revised to 5.4% from 4.6%, while hours worked increased 2.9%, compared with 2.6% previously estimated..

Productivity in durable manufacturing increased by 3.6%, with output rising 8.9% and hours worked increasing 5.1%.

In nondurable manufacturing, productivity grew 2.1% because output increased 1.4% while hours worked decreased 0.6%.

On an annual basis, nonfarm productivity increased 2.2%, while manufacturing productivity rose by 1.1%.

US Q2 Productivity Rises More than Expected
US nonfarm business sector labor productivity rose 1.4% in the second quarter of 2026, more than market expectations of a 0.6% increase, preliminary estimates showed. Output increased 1.7% and hours worked increased 0.3%. Meanwhile, manufacturing sector labor productivity increased 1.9% in the second quarter of 2026, as output increased 4.6% and hours worked increased 2.6%. In the durable manufacturing sector, productivity increased 2.7% and in the nondurable manufacturing sector productivity increased 2%. From the same quarter a year ago, nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased 2.2% in the second quarter of 2026. Total manufacturing sector productivity increased 0.9% from the same quarter a year ago.

US Productivity Revised Lower in Q1
US nonfarm business sector labor productivity rose by 0.3% in Q1 2026, less than 0.8% in the preliminary estimate and compared to a 1.6% increase in the previous quarter. It is the smallest productivity gain in a year as output increased 1% and hours worked rose 0.7%, compared to 1.5% and 0.7% respectively in the first estimate. In the manufacturing sector, productivity surged by 3.2%, less than 3.6% in the previous release as output increased 3.3% and hours worked saw no growth. Durable manufacturing saw a 5.5% rise in productivity, in line with the preliminary estimate, reflecting a 5.8% increase in output and a 0.3% rise in hours worked. Nondurable manufacturing productivity increased by 0.9%, less than 2% initially expected, as output went up 0.5% and hours worked decreased 0.4%. Annually, US productivity rose by 2.8%, also below 2.9% in the first release, but the biggest annual gain since Q3 2024, reflecting an increase in output of 3.2% and a 0.4% rise in hours worked.
