US Natural Gas Stocks Rise Less Than Expected

US natural gas storage increased by 44 billion cubic feet in the week ended September 11, 2026, slightly below market expectations of a 49 bcf injection.

The build was significantly smaller than the 87 bcf increase recorded during the same week last year and the five-year average injection of 74 bcf for the period from 2021 to 2025.

Total working gas in storage rose to 3.298 trillion cubic feet, leaving inventories around 3.6% below levels recorded in the corresponding week a year earlier but approximately 3.7% above the five-year average.

The latest data followed a 40 bcf injection in the previous week ended September 4.

US Natural Gas Stocks Rise More Than Expected
US energy firms added 40 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas to storage in the week ending September 4, 2026, above market expectations of a 31-bcf build. This compares with an injection of 69 bcf during the same week a year ago and an average increase of 52 bcf for that week over the past five years (2021–2025). The latest injection increased stockpiles to 3.254 trillion cubic feet (tcf), which is 2.4% below the level recorded in the same week a year ago and 4.8% above the five-year average for the week. In the prior week, ended August 28, energy firms added 30 bcf of natural gas to storage.

US Natural Gas Storage Rises as Expected
US energy firms added 30 billion cubic feet of natural gas to storage to 3.214 trillion cubic feet on the last week of August 2026, relatively in line with market expectations of a 31 bcf build and reversing the slowdown to the restocking season from the last two weeks. The build was concentrated in increases in the East (26bps to 753) and the Midwest (24bps to 890). With the rise, US natural gas storage was 5.2% above the current five-year average, albeit 1.5% below levels from the previous year.
