US consumer prices rose 0.6% month-on-month in September 2026, accelerating from 0.4% in August, in line with expectations and marking the largest monthly increase since April.
The energy index surged 5.2%, following a 2.1% rise in August, driven largely by a 9.1% jump in gasoline prices, which accounted for more than half of the overall CPI increase.
Shelter costs rose 0.4%, up from 0.3% in August, while food prices were unchanged as higher dining-out costs offset falling grocery prices.
Meanwhile, core CPI, excluding food and energy, increased 0.3%, exceeding expectations for a 0.2% rise.
