The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe announced this week the reintroduction of the Zimbabwean Dollar, replacing the multiple currency system in use since 2009 when hyperinflation forced the country to abandon the local currency. The measure aims to stabilize the economy, namely to curb black-market currency trade which has contributed to soaring inflation that hit nearly 100 percent in May 2019. Accordingly, the U.S. dollar, South African rand and other foreign currencies will no longer be recognised as legal tender. Historically, the Zimbabwean RTGS Dollar reached an all time high of 8.85 in July of 2019 and a record low of 2.52 in March of 2019.
