US stocks lacked direction on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 trading around the flatline, the Dow Jones falling 120 points and the Nasdaq rising 0.2%, as AI remained a key focus for investors.
The outcome of a lunch meeting between US President Trump and industry leaders on AI safety risks will be closely watched, alongside OpenAI’s DevDay taking place today, for any signals on the industry’s outlook.
Meanwhile, optimism over an Anthropic IPO also supported sentiment.
The IPO could value the company at more than $2 trillion despite a net loss of $42 billion in 2025.
On the other hand, the lack of progress in the Middle East, volatile oil prices and Treasury yields holding at multi-year highs pressured stocks down.
Industrials and tech shares were the top performers, while energy underperformed.
Nvidia (0.7%), Amazon (0.4%), Broadcom (2.4%), Meta (1.5%) and Micron (1%) booked gains while Apple (-1.3%), Microsoft (-0.2%) and Tesla (-1.5%) were lower and Alphabet shares traded little changed.
