US stock indices were muted on Monday, holding recent rallies as markets assessed the outlook on interest rates for this year.
The S&P 500 and Dow were flat near their records and the Nasdaq 100 inched down.
A small majority of the market positioned in accordance with a rate hold by the Federal Reserve next month.
Nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly declined in July to challenge the view of a robust labor market, which was commonly cited by hawkish FOMC members following multiple dissents in the central bank's last meeting.
Meanwhile, fuel costs remained below recent peaks despite risks of prolonged supply setbacks of oil from the Persian Gulf.
Tech giants were mostly higher after a group of brokers signaled strong demand for cloud services, with Meta, Microsoft, and SpaceX adding around 1% each.
On the other hand, Intel fell over 3% as it will be offering $15 billion in stock.
Also, Apple fell by 2.5% after being downgraded to underperform by Jefferies.
