US Natural Gas Stocks Rise More Than Expected

US energy firms added 40 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas to storage in the week ending September 4, 2026, above market expectations of a 31-bcf build.
This compares with an injection of 69 bcf during the same week a year ago and an average increase of 52 bcf for that week over the past five years (2021–2025).
The latest injection increased stockpiles to 3.254 trillion cubic feet (tcf), which is 2.4% below the level recorded in the same week a year ago and 4.8% above the five-year average for the week.
In the prior week, ended August 28, energy firms added 30 bcf of natural gas to storage.
