Hong Kong Unemployment Steady at 3.3%

Hong Kong seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained unchanged at 3.3 percent for the third consecutive period in the three months to September of 2015. While unemployment went down at a slower pace than employment, the labour force participation rate fell by 0.2 p.p. to 61.4 percent.

The number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) decreased by around 1 600 to 135 800 in July - September 2015 compared with the previous period. Decreases were mainly seen in the sectors of accommodation services, food and beverage service activities, and information and communications. Increases were mainly seen in social work activities, and import and export trade.

The number of underemployed persons decreased by around 1 700 to 53 400 while the underemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.4 percent. The increase was mainly observed in the retail sector while a decrease was mainly seen in the sector of decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings.

Total employment decreased by around 12 300 to 3 796 200 and the labour force also declined by around 13 900 to 3 932 100. The labour force participation rate went down to 61.4 percent from 61.6 percent in the previous period.
