Italy Jobless Rate Falls to Lowest Since 2012


The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Italy fell to 9.9 percent in May of 2019 from a downwardly revised 10.1 percent in the previous month and below market expectations of 10.3 percent. It was the lowest jobless rate since February of 2012.

The number of unemployed decreased by 51 thousand from the previous month to 2.580 million in May and those detached from the labour force rose by 4 thousand to 13.199 million, while employment went up by 67 to 23.387 million.

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, stood at 30.5 percent in May.

The country's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, edged up to 59.0 percent in May from 58.9 percent in the previous month. The labor force participation rate stood at 65.7 percent for the fourth straight month.

On an annual basis, unemployment declined by 192 thousand and employment rose by 92 thousand.
