US Futures Steady Ahead of Jobs Report

2026-10-01 23:57 By Jam Kaimo Samonte 1 min. read

US stock futures were little changed on Friday as investors cautiously awaited the September jobs report, which could provide fresh clues on the health of the labor market and shape expectations for Federal Reserve monetary policy.

However, markets will require a higher threshold for a strong jobs report to warrant bets on a Fed rate hike this month, with traders currently assigning roughly a 75% probability to rates remaining unchanged.

Investors also tracked geopolitical developments as the US considered deploying another aircraft carrier and additional troops to the Middle East, potentially escalating the conflict with Iran and causing further disruptions to regional energy supplies.

In corporate news, Anthropic is reportedly exploring plans to go public as early as mid-November.

During regular trading on Thursday, the S&P 500 rose 0.19%, while the Dow and Nasdaq Composite each edged up 0.04% as Treasury yields retreated from multi-decade highs.

US Stocks Rise as Treasury Selloff Pauses
US stocks closed mostly higher on Thursday, erasing earlier losses as the Treasury selloff came to a halt. The S&P 500 gained 0.2%, the Nasdaq rose 0.3%, while the Dow closed near flat. The pause in the bond rout sent 10-year Treasury yields lower from their highest since 2002, with an unwinding of crowded positions helping fuel the rebound. Treasuries also gained after Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson said it may take more time to assess whether further rate hikes are needed. The pause lended some support to credit-sensitive stocks. Chipmakers, which are facing record levels of debt issuance, closed mostly higher. Nvidia gained 1.1%, AMD rose 0.6%, and Micron added 3% after issuing an upbeat current-quarter forecast following strong fiscal fourth-quarter results. Treasury yields had previously extended a months-long rise, pressured by higher oil prices, which fueled inflation concerns and reinforced expectations of further rate hikes by central banks.
