US stock indices closed mostly lower on Wednesday as a rebound in oil prices limited gains from slower-than-expected PCE inflation.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2% and the Dow shed 444 points, while the Nasdaq gained 0.2%.

Financials weighed on the Dow and on the S&P 500 as yields remained elevated amid higher oil prices and little progress in US-Iran peace talks, fueling concerns over persistent energy-driven inflation.

Most industrials also closed lower.

Meanwhile, core PCE inflation rose a less-than-expected 0.2% in August, boosting hopes that the Fed will refrain from raising rates in October.

AI hyperscalers and chipmakers closed mostly higher ahead of Micron's earnings after the bell.

Alphabet rose 0.9%, Microsoft added 0.8%, Nvidia gained 0.5%, and Intel advanced 3.7%.

Micron closed flat.

On the month, the S&P 500 fell 0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 rose 3.2%, and the Dow shed 2,280 points.
