US stock futures edged lower on Tuesday as Wall Street returned from a holiday-extended weekend, with elevated oil prices keeping inflation risks and interest rate concerns in focus.

Oil prices climbed further after the US and Iran exchanged strikes over the weekend.

Investors also faced mounting trade tensions as Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of US goods come into effect on Tuesday.

On the monetary policy front, markets are pricing in about a 60% probability that the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates by 25 basis points next week.

In corporate developments, Uber hired banks to meet with investors this week ahead of a planned debut euro bond sale.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk halted two additional trials of its experimental heart disease drug, dealing another setback to the treatment’s prospects.

The Dow Jones Index Closes 0.51% Lower
The Dow Jones Index dropped 272 points or 0.51 percent on Friday to close at 53414 points. Losses were led by Apple (-2.55%), Alphabet (-2.10%) and Microsoft (-2.05%). Offsetting the fall, top gainers were Caterpillar (1.65%), Honeywell International (0.95%) and Home Depot (0.88%).

US Stocks Close Lower After Strong Jobs Report
US stocks closed mostly lower on Friday after stronger-than-expected labor market data gave the Fed more room to raise interest rates. The S&P 500 lost 0.4%, the Dow shed 272 points, while the Nasdaq added 0.2%. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 162K, above expectations for a gain of just over 50K jobs. Credit-sensitive sectors pulled back after the data as yields rebounded. Alphabet shed 1.1%, Microsoft lost 2%, Tesla tumbled 5.9%, and Palantir shed 4.5%, while JPMorgan retreated 0.9% and Visa fell 1%. Still, chipmakers rose after underperforming earlier in the week, helping to support the Nasdaq. Nvidia gained 0.8%, Micron rose 6.1%, Intel added 4.5%, and Marvell advanced 7% amid signs of optimism surrounding OpenAI’s new GPT model. Sandisk soared 11.9%, and AMD added 4.7%. On the week, the Dow dropped 0.3% while the S&P 500 added 0.1% and the Nasdaq rose 0.4%. The US stock market will be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
