US Stocks Fall Sharply

US stocks closed lower on Thursday amid deteriorating macroeconomic backdrop and renewed doubts over AI spending.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.2%, the Nasdaq 100 lost 1.9%, and the Dow Jones shed 507 points.

Communication services and consumer discretionary were by far the worst performing sectors while tech was also under pressure.

Despite solid earnings, Alphabet fell 6.9% after raising its capital spending forecast, while Tesla tumbled 14.5% as profit declined despite strong electric-vehicle deliveries.

Other hyperscalers also weakened, with Nvidia (-1.6%), Microsoft (-2.2%), Meta (-3.4%), Amazon (-4.6%), Broadcom (-1.1%) and Oracle (-4.6%) posting losses.

Treasury yields rose as tighter naval blockades in the Middle East raised energy supply concerns and initial jobless claims fell to a 57-year low.

Goldman Sachs shed 2.1%, while Visa fell 0.5%.

Comcast lost 6.8% after reporting a declined in profits, while RTX added 7.3% after beating expectations.

The Dow Jones Index gained 479 points or 0.93 percent on Friday to close at 51829 points. Gains were led by Microsoft (3.71%), Sherwin-Williams (2.72%) and Amgen (2.15%). Biggest losers were Salesforce (-1.76%), IBM (-0.71%) and Nike (-0.61%).

US Stocks Rise as Oil Pullback Halts Yield Surge
US stock indices rose on Friday as easing oil prices halted the surge in Treasury yields. The S&P 500 rose 0.5%, the Dow added 479 points, and the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.4%. Oil prices fell after news that the US and Iran moved closer to an agreement to lift naval blockades on tankers in the Persian Gulf and ease economic measures against Tehran. Benchmark borrowing costs halted their surge after reaching multi-decade highs. AI stocks were mixed. Hardware shares were mostly higher, with Applied Materials up 2.3% and Lam Research rising 2.6%. Among hyperscalers, Alphabet rose 0.6%, and Microsoft gained 3.7% after announcing plans to merge its consumer and workplace Copilot AI assistants into a product for corporate customers. Meta fell 3.3%, but surged around 12% on the week after a series of hardware releases following its Muse AI agent. Oracle lost 1.7%. Financials were mostly higher. During the week, the S&P 500 rose 0.6%, the Nasdaq 100 jumped 2.1%, and the Dow shed 103 points.

The Dow Jones Index is picking up 163 points or 0.32 percent on Friday. Gains are led by Microsoft (2.53%), Caterpillar (1.63%) and 3M (0.79%). Biggest losers are Nike (-1.31%), Visa (-0.58%) and Chevron (-0.52%).
