The general business activity index for the Dallas Fed’s service sector fell to 4.2 in August 2026 from 6.6 in the prior month.

Despite the modest decline in optimism, the index remained in positive territory, indicating continued improvement in broader business conditions, while uncertainty was broadly unchanged.

The revenues index declined to 6.6 from 9.5, while the company outlook index fell sharply to 3.0 from 10.4.

Input price pressures intensified, with the index rising to 35.6 from 33.5, while selling-price growth eased to 8.9 from 14.2.

Capital spending also weakened to 6.0 from 11.5.

Labor-market conditions softened, with the employment index falling to 0.8 from 2.6, although wages and benefits edged higher.

Looking ahead, firms remained optimistic, with the future general business activity index rising to 18.6 from 16.8.

Dallas Fed Business Activity Rises Most in 11 Months
The general business activity index for the service sector published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas rose to 6.6 in July of 2026 from 2.9 in the previous month, marking the sharpest pace of growth in 11 months. The result was aligned with other similar surveys in the period as exports of energy in the Middle East were momentarily restored, lowering energy prices and operating costs to improve margin prospects in the sector. Revenue growth eased slightly (9.8 vs 9.5 in June), although hours worked rose faster (4.9 vs 3.6). Meanwhile, input prices slowed (33.5 vs 36.5) while selling charges rose sharply (14.2 vs 7.7). Looking ahead, the general business conditions for companies rose to 21 from 17.1.

The general business activity index for the service sector published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas rebounded to 2.9 in June 2026 from -7.7 in May. Perceptions of broader business conditions also improved, with the company outlook index jumping 12 points to 6.1, while uncertainty remained largely unchanged. Selling price pressures edged up to 7.7 from 5.0, as input costs and wages rose at a faster pace. Expectations for future activity strengthened markedly, with firms reporting improved outlooks for revenue and overall business activity, while employment and capital expenditure expectations remained firmly in positive territory.
