Australia Jobless Rate Falls to 3-Year Low

Australia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 5.6 percent in August of 2016 from 5.7 percent in July and below market consensus of 5.7 percent. It was the lowest jobless rate since July 2013 as the economy lost 3,900 jobs and the number of unemployed decreased by 10,500.

The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate came in at 64.7 percent from 64.9 percent in the preceding month.

Employment fell to 11,963,700: full-time employment went up 11,500 to 8,166,100 and part-time employment decreased by 15,400 to 3,797,700.

Unemployment decreased to 10,500. The number of unemployed persons looking for full-time work increased 14,900 to 496,900 and the number of unemployed persons only looking for part-time work decreased by 25,400 to 216,400.

Seasonally adjusted aggregate monthly hours worked in all jobs decreased 3.9 million hours to 1,656.0 million hours.
