US Futures Flat to Start the Week

US stock futures were little changed on Monday as investors awaited fresh market catalysts this week, with the major indexes coming off a losing week after a sharp selloff in semiconductor stocks.

Last week, the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones lost 1.55% and 0.93%, respectively.

The VanEck Semiconductor ETF tumbled nearly 9%, marking its third weekly decline in the past four weeks.

Investors also continued to monitor escalating hostilities between the US and Iran, which pushed oil prices higher and heightened concerns over inflation and the potential for interest rate hikes.

Iran said its ceasefire with the US had effectively collapsed, while the US military reported the death of a third service member in the past two days.

Market participants are now turning their attention to a new wave of corporate earnings this week, including results from Alphabet, Tesla, and Intel.

US stock indices closed mostly lower on Monday as gains in technology stocks failed to offset weakness in the broader market amid concerns over further escalation in the Middle East. The S&P 500 lost 0.2%, the Dow shed 307 points and the Nasdaq 100 closed nearly flat. Traditional sectors came under pressure after oil prices swung sharply amid the worsening conflict between the US and Iran. Treasury yields rose as energy-driven inflation concerns reinforced expectations of a Fed rate hike later this year. Major banks traded lower, with JPMorgan (-0.6%) and Bank of America (-1.4%) declining. Manufacturers also posted losses, with Applied Materials shedding 0.7%. Meanwhile, chipmakers rebounded following the recent tech pullback as markets continued to assess whether AI hyperscalers will slow spending on AI infrastructure in the coming quarters. US Stocks Trim Gains
US stocks trimmed early gains and traded mixed on Monday as escalating geopolitical tension weighed against fresh support from chip producers. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 were slightly higher, while the Dow fell over 200 points. Long-term Treasury yields rose after the US and Iran extended strikes on Monday, while Houthi forces stated they would attack commercial vessels from Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. Fuel costs remained elevated and risked pro-inflationary pressures that support the outlook of a Fed rate hike this year. Apple and Oracle dropped around the 3% level, while Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs erased early gains to fall over 1% each. Still, chip producers gained as markets continued to gauge whether AI hyperscalers are due to slow spending on AI infrastructure in the next quarters. Micron and Sandisk rose 5%. Alphabet gained 2% ahead of its guidance update on Wednesday, the latest bellwether for both chip and software development capital expenditure.
