US Stocks Fall, Earnings and Fed Weigh

The S&P 500 was down 0.5%, the Nasdaq fell 1%, and the Dow lost about 70 points on Thursday, led by disappointing results from major tech companies, while investors continued to digest comments from Chair Powell, cautioing that a December rate cut is not a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, meeting between Presidents Trump and Xi concluded with the US lowering overall tariffs on Chinese imports by 10% to 47%, while Beijing pledged to work very hard to stop the flow of fentanyl and increase purchases of US soybeans.

Meta tumbled over 12% after booking a $15.93B one-time tax related charge and as investors questioned increased capital expenditures due to its AI development.

Also, MSF fell more than 1.5% after reporting that its OpenAI investment reduced quarterly earnings by $3.1B.

On the other hand, Alphabet added 2.6% after posting stronger-than-expected earnings, while Eli Lilly gained more than 1% after raising its full-year revenue guidance.

Apple and Amazon are set to report today.

Tech Rout Drags US Stocks Sharply Lower
US stocks fell sharply on Friday as a steep selloff in semiconductor shares rattled markets. The Nasdaq dropped 4.2%, marking its worst session since April 2025, while the S&P 500 lost 2.6%. The Dow Jones declined 1.4% after reaching a record high the previous day. Chipmakers led the retreat, with Broadcom falling more than 7% following a double-digit decline on Thursday. Marvell Technology and Micron Technology plunged about 16% and 13%, respectively, while Intel and AMD lost around 11%. The weakness came after stronger-than-expected jobs data showed the US economy added 172,000 positions in May, far exceeding forecasts. The report pushed Treasury yields higher, with the 10-year yield rising above 4.5% and the 30-year yield topping 5%, fueling concerns that elevated borrowing costs could weigh on economic growth and investment. For the week, the S&P 500 fell more than 2%, while the Nasdaq lost around 4.7%.

The Dow Jones Index is losing 54 points. Losses were led by Cisco Systems (-3.95%), Caterpillar (-2.92%) and IBM (-2.24%). Offsetting the fall, top gainers were Coca-Cola (2.06%), Sherwin-Williams (2.05%) and McDonalds (1.95%).
