US Stocks Remain Near Peaks

US equity indices remained near fresh highs on Friday in thin holiday trading, as the outlook of economic growth and more accommodative monetary policy supported earnings prospects.

All three main averages were near the flatline, with the S&P 500 briefly notching a record of 6,940 in early deals.

Despite optimism that corporate revenues will remain robust, skepticism on the magnitude of rate cuts by the Fed next year and lingering concerns that capital expenditure in AI infrastructure is exaggerated prevented a sharper "Santa Clause rally" ahead of the turn of the year.

Commodity players were under the spotlight as precious and base metals extended their rallies, with Freeport-McMoRan gaining more than 2.5%.

Oil producers swung as markets assessed the impact that the White House's rhetoric against Venezuelan energy exports had on global supply Meanwhile, Nvidia added 1.5% after its licensing deal with AI startup Groq.

Dow Jones Set Fresh Record High
The Dow edged 0.1% higher to a record high, while the S&P 500 added 0.5% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.8%, amid a renewed bid for large-cap technology and AI-linked names that offset lingering caution ahead of key US macro data later this week. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks drove the move, with Nvidia (2.5%) and Broadcom (3.4%) extending gains and Oracle jumping 9.6% after an analyst upgrade tied to AI demand, reinforcing confidence in sustained capital spending on data services. The rebound followed last week’s sharp tech-led selloff, as investors reassessed valuations after forward multiples compressed meaningfully. In contrast, software stocks lagged, reflecting concerns that rapid advances in generative AI could pressure pricing power and cloud growth visibility for legacy platforms. Focus now shifts to the delayed January jobs report and upcoming CPI data, which are expected to refine expectations for the pace of economic cooling and the timing of potential policy easing.

US Stocks Swing to Gains
US stock indices swung higher on Monday on strong support from companies in the AI space, while markets awaited a batch of key economic data later this week. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 were around 0.5% higher each, while the more defensive Dow inched above the flatline to a new record high. AI services and infrastructure companies led the gains, with Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD rising around 3% each to set the pace for processors makers and Palantir and Oracle soaring 4.5% and 8%, respectively, to reflect the positive momentum for data services. The surge coincided with another poor session for software companies, holding the selloff from last week as improving automation tools from Anthropic ignited concerns on the future of software that is vulnerable to AI. Intuit and Salesforce fell over 2% each. In turn, Eli Lilly inched higher after acquiring Orna Therapeutics for $2.4 billion. Meanwhile, inflation expectations measured by the NY Fed fell to a six-month low.
