The US economy likely added 70,000 payrolls in January 2026, up slightly from 50,000 in December, reinforcing signs of a cooling labour market and potentially pointing to a more entrenched slowdown.
The delayed report is also expected to show the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.4%, while wages likely rose 0.3% month-on-month, unchanged from December.
However, annual wage growth is seen easing to 3.6% from 3.8%.
Beyond the headline payrolls and unemployment figures, the January jobs report will also incorporate the annual benchmark revisions and updated seasonal adjustment factors from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
These revisions are expected to significantly lower the estimated pace of hiring for 2025, after a preliminary assessment that pointed to a record downward adjustment of 911,000 jobs for the year through March 2025.
