Spain Inflation Rate Back to Negative Territory

Consumer prices in Spain fell 0.3 percent year-on-year in January of 2016, after being unchanged in December, preliminary estimates showed. The monthly rate deteriorated further to -1.9 percent, the lowest on record.

Figures came much worse than market expectations. Lower electricity prices were the main reason for the fall in inflation rate.

The harmonized index declined 0.4 percent year-on-year and 2.5 percent on a monthly basis.
