India Consumer Inflation Edges Down in August


Indian consumer prices rose by an annual 7.8 percent in August of 2014, slowing slightly from 7.96 percent in July. Provisional estimates showed the annual food inflation accelerated to 9.42 percent.

Fruit prices rose at a faster 24.27 percent (22.48 percent) while cost of vegetables eased to 15.15 percent (16.88 percent in the previous month). Cost of food and beverages increased 9.16 percent year-on-year, the same rate recorded in July. 

Cost of fuel and light rose 4.15 percent in August, down from a 4.47 percent increase in the previous month and cost of clothing and footwear slowed slightly to 8.53 percent from 8.73 percent in July. 

The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for August of 2014 are 8.35 percent and 7.04 percent.
