Scrap Steel
Scrap steel is discarded, leftover, or end-of-life steel that is collected, melted down, and recycled to create new steel products. Over 70% of recycled steel goes back into steelmaking, predominantly via Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), without losing any integrity, quality, or structural strength. Melting scrap in an EAF uses roughly 75% less energy and generates significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to converting virgin iron ore into liquid iron using traditional blast furnaces, making it a larger part of steelmaking in economies with emissions controls. Scrap steel is traded across both physical commodity exchanges and localized, over-the-counter (OTC) supply chains worldwide.
