Bitcoin climbed to around $116,000 on Monday, reaching a two-week high as progress in US-China trade talks fueled risk appetite and lifted global markets.

Investors are hopeful for a breakthrough at Thursday’s Trump-Xi meeting following productive weekend negotiations in which US and Chinese trade officials reportedly reached consensus on several contentious issues.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Trump’s threat of a 100% tariff was “off the table,” while adding that Beijing agreed to pause for a year its planned expansion of rare earth export controls.

Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve is widely expected to deliver a rate cut this week after softer inflation data on Friday.

Adding to bullish sentiment, on-chain analytics firm Glassnode indicated that a potential trend reversal may be underway, as selling pressure and negative sentiment appear to have peaked.

Bitcoin Hits 8-Week Low
Bitcoin fell below $76,600 on Thursday, reaching its lowest level in around eight weeks as a sharp selloff in technology stocks spread to other risk-sensitive assets, further weakening sentiment across cryptocurrency markets. The Nasdaq 100 plunged, led by semiconductor companies facing disappointing earnings outlooks and concerns that Democratic control of Congress could bring tighter regulation of the artificial intelligence industry. These developments have increased investor caution towards technology-related investments, spilling over into digital assets. Meanwhile, cryptocurrencies are already facing industry-specific headwinds, including the fallout from the Binance hack and fading retail investor interest. The renewed volatility in technology shares has added to these pressures, offsetting the potential support from easing US Treasury yields, which would normally improve the appeal of speculative assets.

Bitcoin Falls as US Midterm Results Roll In
Bitcoin fell toward $76,000 on Wednesday, reaching its lowest level since mid-September, as early US midterm election results pointed to potential Democratic gains in Congress. This raised uncertainty over the outlook for crypto-related legislation, as a Democratic takeover could complicate efforts to advance industry-backed measures, including the Clarity Act, and alter the regulatory priorities of Congress. The cryptocurrency also remained under pressure from lingering fallout from last week's $6.3 billion Binance hack and subdued retail demand amid the growing appeal of artificial intelligence investments. Bitcoin has now lost around 6% over the past week. Meanwhile, US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs saw more than $1 billion in outflows on Friday and Monday as investors increased downside protection ahead of the elections.

Bitcoin Drops on Binance Security Breach
Bitcoin fell to as low as $76,000 on Friday, hitting its lowest level since mid-September, as news of a major security breach at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, intensified selling pressure. The exchange estimated the financial impact of the incident at around $6.3 billion, with approximately $3 billion in affected assets frozen on-chain through coordination with blockchain partners. Other digital assets, including Ether, Solana and XRP, also weakened. Broader risk aversion, fueled by concerns over AI-related spending and disappointing technology earnings, further weighed on sentiment. Meanwhile, around $1.3 billion in bullish crypto positions were liquidated over 24 hours, ahead of an $11 billion options expiry on Deribit. However, US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $423.7 million in net inflows from Monday to Wednesday, pointing to renewed institutional demand.
