The UK’s goods trade deficit has widened in recent years, driven in part by a stronger pound that boosted domestic demand and imports while weighing on exports. In 2024, the UK’s top five imports were cars, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, refined oil, mechanical power generators, and crude oil. Over half of these imports originated from the EU, particularly Germany, the Netherlands, and France, with China and the US also serving as major trading partners.
