Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in the UK surged 44.5% year-on-year to 43,106 units in July 2026, lifting their market share to 27.5%. The strong increase partly reflected a weak comparison with July 2025, when some buyers delayed purchases pending confirmation of eligibility for the Electric Car Grant (ECG). The SMMT now expects BEVs to account for 27.4% of registrations in 2026, up from a previous forecast of 26.8% but still well below the UK's 33% mandate target. Looking ahead, BEV market share is projected to reach 32.1% in 2027, remaining short of the 38% target.
