FTSE 100 Edges Up for 3rd Day
The FTSE 100 closed higher on Thursday, extending its winning streak to three sessions, supported by strong performances from mining and energy stocks. Gold producers Fresnillo and Endeavour Mining advanced 3.7% and 2.6%, respectively, while Rio Tinto gained more than 1.5%. Oil majors also provided support, with BP rising 2.5% and Shell adding 0.7% as crude prices moved higher. The gains were partly offset by a sharp decline in JD Sports, which plunged more than 14% after cutting its profit outlook amid difficult trading conditions in the second quarter. Meanwhile, rising oil prices renewed concerns over inflation, while the recent rally in government bonds lost momentum and yields moved higher again.

FTSE 100 Falls, JD Sports Down 10%
The FTSE 100 declined on Thursday, ending a two-session advance. JD Sports was the biggest drag, plunging more than 10% after the sportswear retailer lowered its profit outlook, citing challenging trading conditions during the second quarter. Mining stocks also moved lower, with Rio Tinto falling 0.7% and Anglo American losing 0.8%, while oil majors Shell and BP edged down slightly. Persistent concerns over elevated oil prices and their potential impact on inflation continued to weigh on sentiment, although a recovery in global bond markets following intervention by the US Treasury provided some support. Investors also remained focused on developments in the Middle East. President Donald Trump warned that countries providing any form of support to Iran could face economic consequences as Washington seeks to resolve the conflict.
