The FTSE 100 declined on Thursday, ending a two-session advance.
JD Sports was the biggest drag, plunging more than 10% after the sportswear retailer lowered its profit outlook, citing challenging trading conditions during the second quarter.
Mining stocks also moved lower, with Rio Tinto falling 0.7% and Anglo American losing 0.8%, while oil majors Shell and BP edged down slightly.
Persistent concerns over elevated oil prices and their potential impact on inflation continued to weigh on sentiment, although a recovery in global bond markets following intervention by the US Treasury provided some support.
Investors also remained focused on developments in the Middle East.
President Donald Trump warned that countries providing any form of support to Iran could face economic consequences as Washington seeks to resolve the conflict.
