FTSE 100 Edges Up

The FTSE 100 edged higher on Friday, remaining within a narrow ±0.5% range as investors stayed cautious amid uncertainty over a lasting agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Precious metals miners outperformed, with Fresnillo and Endeavour gaining 5.3% and 4.1%, respectively, while Rio Tinto and Anglo American added around 1%-1.5%.
Diageo climbed more than 3%, extending Thursday’s 5.6% gain following its restructuring announcement.
In contrast, Shell and BP fell as oil prices fluctuated and remained lower for the week.
JD Sports rose more than 2% after appointing Peter Agnefjäll as chairman from September 1.
Meanwhile, Lloyds reported that UK house prices were unchanged in July, with annual growth slowing to 0.1%, its weakest pace since November 2023.
Elsewhere, weaker US jobs data reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike next month.
The FTSE 100 finished slightly higher for the week.
