The FTSE 100 Index Opens 0.18% Higher

The FTSE 100 Index gained 42 points or 0.39 percent on Friday to close at 10910 points. Gains were led by Fresnillo (5.33%), Endeavour (4.06%) and Diageo (3.23%). Biggest losers were Burberry (-1.30%), Glencore (-1.14%) and Shell (-1.13%).

The FTSE 100 edged higher on Friday, remaining within a narrow ±0.5% range as investors stayed cautious amid uncertainty over a lasting agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Precious metals miners outperformed, with Fresnillo and Endeavour gaining 5.3% and 4.1%, respectively, while Rio Tinto and Anglo American added around 1%-1.5%. Diageo climbed more than 3%, extending Thursday’s 5.6% gain following its restructuring announcement. In contrast, Shell and BP fell as oil prices fluctuated and remained lower for the week. JD Sports rose more than 2% after appointing Peter Agnefjäll as chairman from September 1. Meanwhile, Lloyds reported that UK house prices were unchanged in July, with annual growth slowing to 0.1%, its weakest pace since November 2023. Elsewhere, weaker US jobs data reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike next month. The FTSE 100 finished slightly higher for the week.

The FTSE 100 Index is gaining 19 points or 0.18 percent on Friday. Leading the gains are Fresnillo (2.63%), BAE Systems (1.91%) and Convatec Group (1.68%). Top losers are Rentokil Initial (-1.38%), Persimmon (-1.30%) and Whitbread (-0.95%).
