UK Bond Yields Edge Up

2026-11-06 14:56 By Joana Ferreira 1 min. read

UK 10-year gilt yields edged above 5.15%, recovering from recent two-month lows and tracking US Treasury yields higher, after a strong US jobs report reinforced expectations of a Fed rate hike next month.

Even so, the bond market remained supported globally by a broader flight to safety, as investors rotated out of tech stocks amid concerns that a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections could pave the way for tighter AI regulation and slower infrastructure investment.

Meanwhile, markets continued to assess the implications of the Bank of England's policy decision on Thursday, where the central bank raised interest rates for the first time in more than three years.

Governor Andrew Bailey signaled that further tightening may be necessary unless the war in Iran is resolved.

As a result, markets have strengthened their expectations for additional monetary tightening, with three more rate increases now fully priced in by November 2027.

UK Gilt Yields Fall as Flight to Safety Offsets Hawkish BoE Stance
UK 10-year gilt yields fell toward 5.1%, their lowest level since late August, as a broader flight to safety supported government bonds. Investors rotated out of tech stocks, accelerating their sell-off of chipmakers and hyperscalers amid concerns that a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections could pave the way for tighter AI regulation and slow the pace of infrastructure investment. Meanwhile, markets continued to assess the implications of the Bank of England’s policy decision on Thursday. The BoE raised interest rates for the first time in more than three years, with Governor Andrew Bailey signaling that further tightening may be necessary unless the war in Iran is resolved. Consequently, markets have strengthened their expectations for further monetary tightening, with three additional rate increases now fully priced in by November 2027. The BoE also warned that inflation could peak at 4.9% in Q2 2027, while its adverse scenario points to a sharper increase to 6.2% in Q3.

UK Gilt Yields Trim Losses After BoE Rate Hike
The UK 10-year gilt yield pared its earlier decline to trade just below 5.15% after the Bank of England raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 4%, marking its first increase in more than three years. Governor Andrew Bailey signaled that further rate increases may be necessary unless the Iran war is resolved, which would help ease the inflationary pressures behind the latest hike. Markets have since strengthened their bets on further monetary tightening, with three additional rate increases now fully priced in by November 2027. The BoE also warned that inflation could peak at 4.9% in Q2 2027, while its adverse scenario points to a sharper increase to 6.2% in Q3. Despite domestic pressure on yields, global bond markets remained supported by falling US Treasury yields following a sweeping Democratic victory in the US midterm elections, while a sell-off in technology stocks prompted investors to seek safer assets such as government bonds.
