The FTSE 100 advanced by more than 0.5% on Wednesday, reaching a three-week high as pharmaceutical, energy and consumer stocks supported the index.

AstraZeneca and GSK led the gains in healthcare, with both shares rising over 3%.

Defence stocks also performed strongly, as Babcock climbed 3.5%, BAE Systems added 2.2% and Rolls-Royce gained 1%.

Among energy companies, Shell rose more than 1%, while BP advanced by over 0.5%.

Consumer-focused stocks contributed to the positive momentum, with Unilever increasing 2.6% and British American Tobacco gaining 0.9%.

However, losses in banking and mining shares limited the broader advance.

HSBC and Barclays each fell by more than 0.5%, while Rio Tinto and Glencore both declined 0.9%.

Investors globally assessed fresh US inflation figures, which showed consumer prices rising 0.6% in September from the previous month and 3.7% year-over-year, reinforcing concerns about persistent price pressures.
