FTSE 100 Starts Week Higher
The FTSE 100 climbed 1% on Monday, following a 1.1% rise in the previous session, with banking stocks providing the strongest support. Lloyds Banking Group rose more than 2%, while HSBC gained nearly 2%, followed by Standard Chartered at 1.8%, Barclays at 1.5% and NatWest at 1.4%. HSBC also attracted attention after reports that it plans to place greater emphasis on performance-related bonuses rather than fixed salaries. Oil-related shares advanced as crude prices strengthened amid renewed geopolitical uncertainty. Shell gained 1% as concerns over attacks in Ukraine and Saudi Arabia raised questions about regional energy security. Unilever also added more than 1%, contributing to the broader market’s gains. However, Informa fell more than 1% ahead of its Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh later this month. The decline followed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s main airport over the weekend and new UK travel warnings for parts of the country.
