2026-08-28 07:37 By Agna Gabriel 1 min. read

The FTSE 100 rose around 0.3% on Friday, joining a broader European rally as investors awaited Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s closely watched speech at Jackson Hole for clues on the outlook for interest rates and the US economy.

Gains across banks, energy companies and miners provided support, although the UK benchmark was slightly behind its European peers.

Mining stocks benefited from stronger metals prices, with Endeavour up more than 2%, Fresnillo around 1.7%, and both Antofagasta and Anglo American gaining over 1%.

Shell and BP were only modestly higher as Brent crude remained below $90 a barrel.

HSBC also added around 1%, while Lloyds’ latest business barometer offered further evidence of resilient corporate sentiment.

Despite today’s advance, the FTSE 100 is on course for a monthly decline, ending a four-month winning streak.

FTSE 100 Falls for 2nd Day
The FTSE 100 fell more than 0.5% on Thursday, extending its decline for a second consecutive session as weakness across banking, healthcare and commodity-related stocks weighed on the index. Mining shares came under pressure from falling metals prices, while banks and consumer-focused companies also declined. Prudential dropped around 2.5% despite reporting stronger new business profit for the first half, supported by solid performances in Hong Kong and Malaysia. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s stronger-than-expected results and upbeat outlook for artificial intelligence demand provided a significant boost to technology stocks globally, but the FTSE 100 has limited exposure to the sector and therefore lagged its European and US counterparts. Oil prices remained volatile as investors assessed developments around a potential agreement between Iran and Oman to establish a temporary route through the Strait of Hormuz.
